I liked Evie and Lucas’ story so I was really looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, while I liked Gemma in that one, I really did not find her interesting in this one. In fact, she’s annoying. She’s supposed to be this experienced spy and yet, she can’t hold her tongue. A spy blends (unless you’re James Bond, I suppose) but here, she draws attention to herself time and time again. She’s supposed to be an excellent fighter and yet she’s overpowered every time. Knowing that she supposedly cannot control her magic, she puts herself in situations where she freezes because of her magic. I would say that if you are going to take a dangerous job, you should know yourself and your limitations. That’s not Gemma. Further, her feelings for Leo gives me whiplash. I understand her past experience with him wasn’t exactly exemplary but the reminiscing, then the attraction, then holding back, more reminiscing again, ugh, this loop is just tiring since it was repeated ad nauseam.I would say she redeemed herself in the end though so I will probably still read the next book. In the original series, Evie was this “weak” person who became strong and just continued to improve and fight for herself and her people. Her character development was consistent and made sense. Here, the book starts with Gemma supposedly an experienced spy, bragging about being strong, happy to be underestimated, and yet made several bad decisions one after the other - acting out of pride instead of common sense and ignoring her instincts every time.Oh well. Like I said, I will likely still buy the next book in the hopes that Gemma would improve and the romance part makes more sense.
