KU subscription.Every time I read a Lucy Darling book, I remember why she is not one of my go-to authors. She’s a fine writer, but the stories are quite formulaic and don’t have enough depth to them. They are pleasant and sexy, but not memorable. Add little glitches in the story that don’t make sense, and you have an average product. Like if he doesn’t allow people to touch him, he must be a virgin, but it’s not mentioned.Knox is a damaged soul with anger issues, now living with a very nice family who had adopted his twin sister and welcomed him into the family. One day at school, he runs into Whitney and frightens her, and later learns that she is now living with the family because she has nowhere else to go other than a homeless shelter. He is immediately smitten by her, and she is attracted to him even though she does have some fear of him because she has seen him be violent a couple of times. One time was in defense of her. This is such a short story that there is no slow burn to this romance, they fall for each other pretty quickly. It’s a very sweet romance. I liked both characters.There is also something bothersome I have noticed in some other short books by other authors, a lack of description for the main characters. Whitney was described as having dark hair early in the story and later with blue eyes. I couldn’t tell you what Knox looked like except that he had tattoos. I don’t remember any other description. Yet the secondary characters got described, like a woman with gray in her dark hair, blonde cheerleaders, a blonde guy who hits on Whitney, and others. As I said, I’ve noticed that there are some other authors who have done this, leaving the reader to imagine everything yet describing a character we don’t really care about. I like for the author to describe people important to the story. It’s just weird.I liked the parents, Oz and Kennedy, and Knox‘s sister, Faith, and her boyfriend, Ace. Ace was good enough that I probably will mark their book to read down the line when I need some thing really, really light and airy to read.If you like short and sweet stories with hot scenes and appealing characters, and don’t need a detailed plot or digging below the surface of a character, you likely will enjoy this book.
