Don Catherall was born soon after his father left the Marine Corps, still reeling from heavy combat in the South Pacific. Don Catherall and I were roommates at Texas A&M; I’ve spent many an enjoyable hour at his family home in Dallas and know his parents and sisters, so this is a disclaimer, I suppose, if one is needed. We also both served as Marines in Viet Nam several years apart, Don as an enlisted radioman, me as an infantry officer. That said, this memoir has provided insights into Don’s life and thoughts about things of which I’d not been aware before reading this book. The post-combat feelings regarding “men safe abed” just not relating to me or other combat vets are described admirably by Don, as is the irrationality of those feelings, yet the intensity of them at the time. Due to our different perspectives, I suppose, (Don was being told what to do while I was telling Marines what to do), our perceptions of combat differ a bit, but not significantly. The term “spiritual sadness” is probably the best descriptor I’ve ever heard for describing what we felt at seeing people, especially those close to us, die. I associated with Vietnamese people on a daily basis as the commander of a “combined” unit, so I felt a bit differently about our allies than Don. Also, although I was wounded twice, I stayed in the Marine Corps after Viet Nam, so I had more of “structured environment” to help me transition into post-combat than Don did. This is an intensely personal memoir of a man who has encountered some physical and emotional struggles, battled personal demons, and made a successful life for himself, all the while never forgetting his roots nor the war-based events that shaped him—-and his father.
