Sherman’s gripping story illustrates the arc of American growth and transition from the 1840’s through his retirement in 1884. His real life was so accomplished that work of fiction so construed would be dismissed as absurd. To name just a few: he was at Sutter’s Mill when gold was discovered, setting off the California gold rush; he must have traveled more miles by ship, coach, and horseback than nearly any person alive in that timeframe, surviving two shipwrecks; he was founding superintendent of what is now the University of Louisiana; he did more than probably any other person to bring the Confederacy to its knees; marching his army 1,500 miles in the last year of the war in a virtually unbroken series of victories, repeatedly breaking with convention, and turning the tide of the Civil War; in the process interacting directly with Abraham Lincoln, US Grant, and many other leaders of the Union; toured all of Europe after the war; and ran the entire US Army as General of the Army for over a dozen years. But maybe the most enjoyable aspect is his prose: pointed, clever, crisp, and compelling.
